St John of God Public and Private Hospital Midland is the first new hospital in the area for more than 50 years, and will replace the Swan District Hospital when it opens on November 24, 2015.

With Perth’s Hassell Studio at the helm as architects and Deep Green Landscaping the contractors for the site, Street Furniture Australia was approached to provide cost effective quality furnishings.

Mall seats, Slim bollards in powder coated bright silver, Slim Hoop bicycle stands, Frame bin enclosures and a drinking fountain were chosen and installed.

Glen Power, CEO, says the hospital will be future-proofed to cater for a population that could reach 300,000, and will have one of the largest emergency departments in the state.

In 2011 Lend Lease Property Management and Australian Native Landscape Constructions (ANLC) were engaged by the Victorian Government to complete the redevelopment of the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Part of this project involved the construction of the new Therapy Gardens in the Great North Court. The Gardens were built to assist in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients. Street Furniture Australia came on board to build custom benches and install an Arqua Refill post.

The new Royal Children’s Hospital project is the largest hospital redevelopment undertaken by the State Government of Victoria, with a budget of $946 million. The hospital was reopened on 26 October 2011 by Her Majesty The Queen, 50 years after she officially opened the hospital in 1963.

The Arqua Refill post, which was customised for this project, is a tried and tested product that is hygienic, long-lasting, vandal and corrosion resistant, and easily accessible by children and wheelchair users. This product is a perfect fit for the Royal Children’s Hospital, along with the custom-designed benches.

The expansion of Joondalup Health Campus, which commenced in September 2009, has been designed to deliver extensive new facilities for both public and private patients. Architect Esti Nagy approached Street Furniture Australia for the supply of seating, bins, bollards and bike racks. The powder-coated aluminium furniture creates a clean and sophisticated look in the courtyards. Upon completion in mid 2013, the Campus was opened by the WA Health Minister.

St George Hospital began its humble operation in 1894. With over 100 years of service, St George has developed into one of the most respected hospitals in the Sydney region. Street Furniture Australia was commissioned to install a range of free-standing Mall seats, settings and planters in the hospital gardens, where staff, patients and visitors can take a break.

Chatswood Private Hospital underwent a $10 million fitout in 2016, part of the Thirty8 Albert Avenue tower development including serviced apartments and retail.

The project is designed by architects PTW for developer Wu International.

Probuild delivered the construction, installing Escola Slim Benches, with eco-certified hardwood battens. Four Escola Settings are installed in a communal rooftop space.

Custom seats designed by Street Furniture Australia fix onto raised garden beds at the Bupa Aged Care Facility in Clemton Park.

The facility offers 144 beds, with courtyards to allow green fingers of landscape to wrap around the wings on the eastern side, and on the west a courtyard creates a tranquil garden.

Kris Grzybowski from Landscape Services delivered landscape architect Group GSA’s design.

Michelle Herbut and the custom team at Street Furniture Australia designed the seat to be suitable for manufacture and end use.

A comfortable upright profile and armrests assist with sitting and standing, meeting DDA requirements. Standard slats make for simple ongoing maintenance and replacement parts.

NBRS Architecture and Landscape have designed therapeutic spaces for a women’s prison expansion in Sydney, NSW, using “trauma informed principles” to promote rehabilitation.

The Dillwynia Correctional Centre expansion accommodates a growing number of female inmates in NSW, Australia, with increased security requirements and higher frequency of mental health issues.

Within a compact site NBRS has designed greenspace, accommodation, education, work, health, spiritual and visitation spaces to replicate familiar aspects of life outside, helping maintain normality and contribute to healing.

“Our team envisioned a facility that considered the end users. Our aim was to create something that made staff, visitors and inmates feel safe, fostering a sense of normality and positivity,” said Anthea Doyle, Justice Studio Principal, NBRS.

The landscape design was “critical” in providing a sense of space and tranquility to the external spaces of the facility, say NBRS.

“Curved fences and low mass planting, combined with exercise and small congregation zones have been designed with female offenders in mind. These zones have been provided in various locations with dedicated oversight. This allows for self guidance and a sense of freedom to offenders, while maintaining a passive level of security and monitoring,” they write.

“The design seeks to create a responsive and therapeutic environment by incorporating natural tones, natural materials, soft and curved surfaces, seasonal planting and views to nature.”

Mall Curved Slim Benches by Street Furniture Australia contribute to the curves of the landscape, with battens in timber-look Wood Without Worry aluminium woodgrain – highly durable and requiring minimal maintenance.

The battens are specified in tailored aluminium woodgrain Casuarina, with frames in equally hard-wearing and easily maintained Textura Jasper.

Curved and straight Mall Slim Benches are installed around the campus, furnishing green spaces for respite.

The benches are also in calming “de-escalation” spaces adjacent to classrooms – “if inmates (students) become overwhelmed and disruptive in class, they can be removed but within sight lines to allow for them to recalibrate prior to re-joining class,” say NBRS.

The result is an environment designed to contribute to positive health and wellbeing of inmates, a village-style campus and “a break from a typical institutional layout.”
